Dipteryx trees and Macaws

Without the nest cavities provided by Dipteryx trees the these beautiful birds would face an uncertain future

This Scarlet Macaw chick remains safe and dry in its nest cavity in an ancient Dipteryx tree near the Native Community of Infierno

Dipteryx makes the best tree holes in the Amazon!!!

And these cavities are vital to the survival of dozens of species of Amazonian animals

Cavity characteristics, why are they so good?

  • high above the ground making it hard for predators to get to them
  • hard wood makes it impossible for predators to break in from the outside
  • flaky bark helps keep vines and epiphytes from covering the branches and hiding the cavities
  • hard wood, long-lived trees and slow rotting means that cavities last for decades possibly even centuries

Who uses Dipteryx cavities?

  • Scarlet Macaws
  • Red and green Macaws
  • White-bellied Parrots
  • Amazon parrots
  • Caracaras
  • Titiras
  • Many other birds, mammals and insects

Of the hundreds of trees in the Amazon rain forest Dipteryx trees contain the largest number of high quality tree cavities

In the Native Community of Infierno, where the Adopt a Dipteryx project will be implemented, all Scarlet and Red-and-green Macaw nests found to date have been in Dipteryx trees.

Dipteryx cavities are probably the most important nesting resource for these macaws in the western Amazon basin.
